Chapter Eight

Making The Choice

S o while we’re on a roll, why don’t we keep being brutally honest—shall we?

Given the choice between a good, hard workout, and a hot, juicy Big Mac, you might catch me getting in my car and heading to the golden arches.

And that’s just when I’m home alone! Now, throw the chaos of life and relationships and motherhood into the mix, I can confirm that it’s not always easy to make the right decision.

Whether we realize it or not, life is constantly throwing us a series of choices on a minute-by-minute, even second-by-second basis. We are choosing when to get up, when to go to work, what to wear, what to eat, what do drink, what to say, what not to say. You may think that you have to get up and go to work. And there are certainly consequences for not getting up and clocking in. But at the end of the day, it’s a choice you’re making because you’re worried about facing the consequences of not making that choice.

And every day, you’re choosing whether or not you want to be healthy and fit.

End of chapter. Close the book.

But seriously, we like to overcomplicate things. There are a thousand reasons every day why you can choose to not work out—and as a single mom for many years, I can attest that there’s often a really good reason to choose something else over your personal fitness. Things like choosing to take your kid to the doctor, or choosing to put food on the table, or choosing to spend fifteen quality minutes with your partner at the end of a crazy week.

But then there are also lots of bad choices you can make. Like scrolling through Pinterest for a few hours before bed (oops!), or hitting the snooze button for the third time, or maybe, for sure, definitely going to Mickey D’s to hit that late night craving.

So let’s simplify it. Ask yourself, just like we did in the last chapter: what kind of life do you want to live?

If life really is just a series of a thousand choices that we make over and over again on a daily basis, then let’s put fitness into that category, too.

We often think of exercise in this massive way that looms over us like a dark, dumbbell-shaped cloud. I think that this way of thinking is actually a roadblock for most of us who are not fitness-inclined. We think that if today is “day one” of getting in shape, we have to go sign up for some big, money-sucking gym, and go every day, and do these amazing workouts in some way-overpriced yoga pants, and become one of those crazy fitness people that you see all over your social media feeds.

No knock on the crazy fitness people. If anything, we’re a little jealous of you.

But it doesn’t have to be this massive, life-altering commitment starting on day one.

It’s just a little choice; the same as the choice to make your bed.
